Most providers of experiential learning services have a foundation in
adventure programming skills such as the ability to provide technical instruction
on ropes courses or rock climbing. In addition to the pertinent safety skills,
facilitators usually have an educational philosophy founded in the theoretical
concept behind experiential education.
Two things often distinguish adventure program
providers who work with corporate clients from Organizational
Consultants who utilize an experiential methodology.
- Typically, the Adventure Practitioner relies
upon the "adventure crutch" to get a conversation going within
the client group. The Organizational Consultant uses classroom tools -
needs assessment and learning styles information, as well as discussions
from the facilitation of group initiatives.
- The Organizational Consultant using adventure
as a tool also tends to have a backgound in adult education, organizational
change, and/or business management concepts and training methodologies.
Perhaps the most effective facilitators are the professionals coming
from a business background (as mangers in organizations or as training consultants)
who have acquired a repertoire in experiential activities to illustrate
the dynamics and concepts their clients are exploring.
